HELP IS NEEDED URGENTLY IN ORDER TO CONTROL MALARIA, a disease that is severely affecting the population in the Tibetan refugee camps and villages of the Jeerang area, Orissa, India.  A malaria diagnosis unit was obtained for rapid diagnosis thanks to the collaboration of the Col.legi d’Enginyers Tècnics Industrials de Barcelona (Professional Association of Industrial Engineers of Barcelona). This makes possible to start treatments as soon as possible, thus avoiding complications and loss of life.

We are currently working to implement the medical care program, which includes the malaria control project. This project comprises the following measures:

- Providing the population with mosquito nets treated with mosquito repellent. This measure has proved to be the most effective one to reduce the impact of malaria among the population and the number of deaths, specially of children under 5, because the nets protect them during the hours of the day that carry the greatest risk of mosquito bites (according to a WHO report).

- Periodical treatment of the areas where mosquitoes lay their eggs, in order to control the mosquito population (biological control).

- Building a sewing system that collects rain and sewage water in order to avoid the formation of pools of water that are habitat de of mosquitoes that transmit malaria. Without this sewing system improvements in sanitary conditions are not possible.

Thus, there is an URGENT need to buy 3.500 mosquito nets that will be distributed among the population, giving priority to children. The cost of each mosquito net is 6 €. In order to be able to buy this quantity of mosquito nets, there will be a prize draw for a GURU RIMPOCHE statue (25 cm). With 6 € you will get a number to participate in the prize draw for a wonderful Guru Guru Rimpoche statue, but, most importantly, you will be saving a life. The prize draw will take place on 22 December 2007, but it would be commendable if we could have the mosquito nets for this year’s monsoon.
