Jeerang is located in a beautiful and remote wilderness in eastern India, 6 hours away from the nearest city.
Motivated by his great compassion for those who are less fortunate, H.H Gyetrul
Jigme Rimpoché is promoting a Health Care Project in the refugee camp
in Orissa.
As of December 2004, thanks to the installation of a small dispensary
and the services of a physician, primary healthcare assistance has been available
in the monastery and refugee camps, as well as among the general population
that resides in the region of Jeerang, Orissa.
Functions of the dispensary clinic 2004-2006
• The dispensary clinic treats between 20 and 25 patients a day.
• Both the Tibetan population and the local Indian population benefit from
these services, since they can now receive treatment without having to travel
long distances.
• The main diseases treated are: malaria, typhoid fever, asthma, hepatitis
B, gastritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, respiratory infections,
skin infections, and accidents.
The monks, the majority of infants and children, and the population
of the camp can be cured directly of the most typical ailments, including
skin problems, malaria, typhoid fever, colds (rhinovirus), gastritis, pneumonia,
diabetes, and tuberculosis, and can receive first aid for trauma injuries
(cuts, blunt force trauma, fractures).
However, on numerous occasions throughout our experience working with
the population of the refugee camp, we have felt the need for a new hospital
in order to better attend to patients in this area.
We currently have two healthcare clinics, but still lack the adequate facilities
for a hospital, and quite often patients die on their way to the hospital,
since the nearest one in 90 km away (a torturous 6-hour journey). Newborn
babies end up dying due to lack of emergency care, and mothers die due to
the lack of adequate birthing facilities. Others die from blood loss,
unable to receive emergency blood transfusions, and still others perish because
they can’t afford to buy the medicine that is essential to their survival.
If we had a hospital with adequate facilities in the camp, many of these lives could be saved.
The New Hospital
For
this reason, H.H. Gyetrul Jigme Rimpoché has decided to initiate The
New Hospital Project, in order to save lives and reduce health problems,
and in order to provide free medical treatment for families without the means
to pay for it.
The recipients of this free healthcare will be those among the resident populations
within the 30 villages and surrounding areas in the region of Jeerang, which
is a total of around 15,000 people total, from both the Tibetan and local
Indian populations.
Location
Due
to administrative difficulties we’ve faced in attempting to construct a new
building in the refugee camp, within the parameters of the Healthcare Project
we have opted for the renovation of a building until now used for offices,
monks’ quarters, and for the dispensary clinic, in order to provide the site
for the new hospital.
Development phases of the Project
- Phase 1: Continue to provide primary healthcare assistance.
- Phase 2: Facilitate the professional healthcare studies of 4 students in the camps.
The duration of these studies is 3 years.
Two students began their studies in August of 2005, and two students have
received funding to cover the cost of their studies and housing for the three
years of training thanks to the donations of numerous sponsors. In
this way, these students will later be able to provide their services to
their community.
- Phase 3: Renovate the building that
will house the new hospital and acquire the necessary medical equipment and
instruments. The total area to be constructed is 10,000 sq/ft.
The project includes:
– Reconstruction of the hospital
– Providing a source of water and electricity
– Equipment - laboratory, radiology, ultrasound machine, dental instruments, hospital furniture
– Ambulance
– Salaries for the medical and administrative team working in Orissa
The coordinating team and medical team in Orissa are currently in the process
of selecting the medical specialists that will be attending in the future
hospital.
The functional inauguration of the hospital is anticipated to take place within a period of two years.

Urgent necessities
- The
purchase of equipment for RAPID DETECTION OF MALARIA: this would allow for
the rapid treatment of those who suffer from this illness and would help
to avoid the constant deaths caused by malaria in this region
– Cost: 4452.8 € Currently we use simpler tests that cost 1.32 € per test
This is an urgent initiative that would allow us to begin rapid treatment
of those who suffer from malaria and would help us to avoid complications
of this disease among the exposed population. The most common disease
in this region is malaria, since it is an endemic area.
The region of Orissa has the highest rate of cases of deaths due to malaria in all of India.
- The purchase of an ULTRASOUND MACHINE: this would aid in diagnosis
and would allow for constant monitoring of pregnant women and of certain
injuries or conditions.
– Cost 33333 €
- Maintaining the health of expecting
mothers is of vital importance, and therefore it is essential that pre-natal
care be available for these women without their having to travel to the city
of Berhampur.
One AMBULANCE: cost 10526 €
Other projects of Padma Ling Humanitarian
- We
have also been in contact with collaborators from the San Juan de Dios Foundation
in order to provide surgical operations for children in the camp, both to
ensure their survival and to improve their quality of life.
- Healthcare and population control for street dogs: it is of the
utmost importance that the density of the wild canine population be controlled,
and that the risks of communicable diseases carried by dogs be reduced (rabies,
scabies, parasites...)
- Healthcare education for the population of this region
